A world-beater? Or just selling another chardonnay?

Posted on Jul 19, 2016
It’s liquid gold!!!! ….. if you believe the retailer.
“The xxxxx 2014 Chardonnay may become one of the most coveted wines in the land come the 1st of August, and we wanted to make sure you didn’t miss out on this spectacular release.
Whilst we cannot reveal everything, the xxxx 2014 Chardonnay is due to be awarded one of the highest scores possible for an Australian Chardonnay in the upcoming xxxx book….”
Gush, gush, etc, etc.
If you believe the retailer, you’d think paying $33 was a steal for this about-to-be famous wine.
Think again. After checking the Vinloco database, we found this particular wine scored no higher than a silver medal at SEVEN Australian wine shows last year. Not bad but hardly world-beating.
Maybe a lot’s changed since then. Maybe the critic knows something no-one else in the industry does.
Or maybe this is why everyone should take ratings from retailer panels and single-source critics with a big grain of salt. After all, they are in the business of selling wines and ratings.
We at Vinloco have done all the hard work making sense of 30,000 scores from last year’s Australian wine shows.
