Insider tips: 2017’s Top Riesling Contenders

Posted on Dec 9, 2017

Wait… is that a McLaren Vale label in our list of 2017’s top rieslings? Perhaps it’s a case of age before beauty but D’Arenberg’s 2010 Dry Dam Riesling breaks the mould of the Vale’s traditional strengths in warm climate reds to vie with more traditional regions for this year’s pick as Vinloco’s Top Riesling. After culling the 2500 scores attributed to dry riesling at the Australian wine shows this year, the Dry Dam museum release emerged as one of nine wines to garner more than three gold medals. Most of the contenders came from Riesling’s Australian strongholds: Tasmania and the Eden and Clare Valleys. The other dark horse  – albeit one with a strong records on a dry track – was fellow warm climate grower Robert Stein Winery of Mudgee. Who’ll make the final cut remains to be seen when we publish the list of winners early next year. In the meantime, here’s the list of likely contenders:

* Brand’s Laira of Coonawarra Old Station Riesling 2016
* d’Arenberg The Dry Dam Riesling 2010
* Jacob’s Creek Barossa Signature Riesling 2017
* Jim Barry The Florita Riesling 2016
* Leasingham Classic Clare Riesling 2012
* Penfolds Aged Release Eden Valley Riesling 2013
* Robert Stein Winery Dry Riesling 2017
* St Hugo Eden Valley Riesling 2017
